Secret Records are releasing a double
CD of Shakatak Live at the Nakano Sun Plaza Hall, Tokyo on the 15th
December 1983, previously only available in Japan on vinyl.
have enjoyed a level of success and career longevity rarely paralleled in
contemporary music but then Shakatak is a particularly unusual group. Because
of the nature of their music their fan base is one that is far reaching while
always retaining an “underground” element. This paradox sees the band, known
primarily for their musicality, enjoying both high “cult” status and instant
recognition as a household name due to their numerous hit recordings.
It was the release of "Easier Said Than Done" that gave the band the radio exposure needed for their first top-twenty hit. This record introduced their instrumental-unison vocal sound to a much wider audience, and the track stayed in the UK Singles Chart for seventeen weeks. The follow-up, "Night Birds", was their first single to reach the top ten, and the album of the same name gave Shakatak their first gold album, entering at number four and remaining in the charts for twenty-eight weeks. By now a major international act, the success of the release around the world gave them the number-one jazz album slot in Japan, where they have recorded a number of exclusive Japanese releases.
In the 1980’s, the band were in the top five foreign acts in
Japan, and after winning the coveted Silver Award in the Tokyo International
Song Festival, Shakatak were asked to produce an extra album each year
exclusively for the Japanese market. They were also awarded the Japanese Grammy
for best international instrumental album six years running.
This double album, released outside of Japan for the
first time, contains live versions of the biggest hits such as “Night Birds”,
“Streetwalkin’” and “Easier Said Than Done” and beautifully convey Shakatak’s
musicality, live prowess and their ceaseless passion for music. This is the
first time it has been released on CD.
