Secret records are releasing a compilation of early tracks from the only artist ever to fill the places from one to seven on the Jamaican pop chart simultaneously
.

The ‘Jamaican Little Richard’ entered this world on March 27th 1940 and first hit the stage only seventeen years later where he won the Vere Johns Opportunity Hour with a rippling impression of the US rock n’ roller; hence his nickname. Two years later he recorded his first tunes in the early shuffle-beat style which still had echoes of US R&B with added Jamaican ingredients, making it the first distinctive music to come from the small island.

By the early 1960’s Derrick was enjoying great popularity both sides of the Atlantic with Blue Beat and Island Records issuing a considerable amount of his work in the UK. Thanks in most part to the arrival of 2Tone in late 1979, a re-emergence of interest in not only The Specials and Madness but the real genuine originators of ska music like Laurel Aitken, Prince Buster and, of course, Derrick Morgan, created a new stage for these now not so young artists, and once again Mr Morgan, was in demand. With undiminished enthusiasm and a great range of music to choose from he became a crowd draw enthralling the punters until sadly as he moved into his eighth decade the failing eyesight and fragility which comes with age caused him to finally slow down.

This compilation of early tracks by Derrick Morgan features some of his greatest hits like Housewife’s Choice, The Hop, Shake a Leg and Forward March, a song about Jamaica’s Independence. The 14 track LP comes complete with a full colour double sided insert featuring photos and track by track breakdown while the CD contains an additional 8 scorching tracks.

This album is available on CD and LP from the 3rd February 2014.
