3 CD set set of classic tracks from the early years of the Studio One label

Studio One is one of Jamaica's most renowned record labels and recording studios, lovingly described as the ‘Motown of Jamaica’. The record label was involved with most of the major music movements in Jamaica during the 1960s and 1970s including ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub and dancehall.

Founded by
Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd in 1954, the studio’s first recordings were cut in 1963 on Brentford Road in Kingston. Dodd had previously issued music on a series of other labels and had built a name for himself running ‘Sir Coxsone the Downbeat’, one of the largest and most reputable sound systems in the Kingston ghettos. Much of the success of Studio One is credited to Dodd From his earliest days as a producer he has understood the complexities of making a hit. Mr. Dodd values good singing, good song-writing, good horn lines and fierce bass lines... he is reggae's Phil Spector, Berry Gordy, and Dick Clark all wrapped into one.’

Amongst the earliest recordings made in Studio One were "Easy Snappin'" by Theopilus Beckford, backed by Clue J And His Blues Blasters and "That Man is Back" by famed trombonist Don Drummond, both featured on ‘Downbeat Shuffle – Studio One – The Birth Of A Legend’. This album aims to look back to the beginning of the studio’s history as well as feature a number of famous Jamaican musos who started their careers at Studio One including Owen Gray, The Blues Busters, Derrick Morgan, Clancy Eccles and much more.

Buy now for a comprehensive look at a timeless collection of Jamaican music produced from one of the world’s most unique and prolific recording studios!
