180 gram re-issue of the classic 1970 album featuring Double Barrel including a version of Monkey Spanner.

Initially Dave Barker and Ansell Collins worked with producer
Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry in Kingston in the late 1960s, and joined forces in 1971, for the reggae single 'Double Barrel'. Originally released by Techniques Records, part of the Trojan Records label, it topped the Jamaican and UK charts in March of that year. The follow-up release, the similarly styled ‘Monkey Spanner’ enjoyed the same international success. Most of their recorded work was written by the late and legendary Winston Riley.

‘Double Barrel’ and its follow-up ‘Monkey Spanner’ almost single-handedly kicked off the two tone explosion, with their "heavy, heavy monster sound", although by today’s concept it is dismissed as ‘that cheesy organ’. The tracks on the album are relatively varied within the genre whilst still following similar motifs. ‘Impossible Mission’ for example, is a re-orchestrated instrumental version of the title track. The vast majority of the dozen songs within are instrumentals, with ‘Secret Weapon’ being regarded as one of the more notable tracks described as ‘insistent reggae beat and Collins' organ bubbling, burbling, and finally flaring into pure lushness’. The sweetness of Dave Barker's vocals is personified in ‘That Girl’, a perfect pop frothy pop confection, while ‘My Best Girl’ is even better. Collins conjures up moody atmospheres in the background, while Barker perfectly exemplifies love gone wrong melancholy.

Double Barell far exceeded expectations of even the most cynical purchaser, organ playing has never sounded as infamous again! As a result the album had an unquestionably significant impact and influence on the emergence of two tone music. Unfortunately, after cutting one album together, Collins and Barker parted company; Collins became a session player and Barker, now resident in the United Kingdom, singing with several soul groups. Enjoy this re-issue as a vital look at some of the most important and significant two tone music to come from Jamaica.
